CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Four people -- a Chicago Police officer, a doctor, a pharmacy resident, and a suspected gunman -- were killed Monday in a shooting and exchange of gunfire at Chicago’s Mercy Hospital in the South Side Bronzeville neighborhood.

The gunman has since been identified as 32-year-old Juan Lopez of Chicago.

Lopez was found dead after suffering a gunshot wound. It was not immediately clear if he was shot by police or if he turned his gun on himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Fire Media Affairs.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said the incident began around 3:30 p.m. outside the hospital in the 2500 block of South Michigan Avenue as a man argued with 38-year-old Dr. Tamara O'Neal, his ex-fiance. When a third person tried to intervene, the man lifted his shirt to display a handgun, and the person ran into the hospital to call 911, Johnson said.

Shots were fired, and Chicago police officers began arriving to the scene, Johnson said.

The shooting was declared as a domestic incident, Johnson said. Lopez's first victim was emergency room physician Tamara O'Neal, who was his former fiance. Sources told the Chicago Tribune O'Neal recently called off an engagement with Lopez.

"It is especially senseless when a shooting occurs in the healing space of a hospital," said Dr. Patrick Connor, Mercy Hospital ER Director. "Our hospital staff were well trained in emergency preparedness and just completed an active shooter drill in the last month - effectively protected our patients and other employees."

Pharmacy resident Dayna Less, 25, was shot as she walked out of an elevator. She started at Mercy Hospital in July and was a recent graduate of Purdue University.

Both O'Neal and Less had been planning weddings. O'Neal called her's off last month, and Less was to be married in the spring.

Dr. Connor worked closely with Dr. O'Neal and said she was, "completely dedicated to her church. She never worked on Sundays. She led the chior in her church and fundraised every year for disadvantaged children."

Chicago Police Officer Samuel Jimenez, 28, was killed during a shootout with Lopez. Jimenez joined the force in Feb. 2017 and recently completed probationary training in August and was assigned to the 2nd District. Jimenez was married and a father of three children.

Chicago "lost a doctor, pharmaceutical assistant and a police officer, all going about their day, all doing what they loved," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said, fighting back tears. "This just tears at the soul of our city. It is the face and a consequence of evil."

"Our hearts go out to the lives that were lost. We will all need healing to say the least," said Doctor Michael Davenport, Chief Medical Officer.
