CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 91-year-old Korean War veteran and long-time White Sox fan is getting a home makeover courtesy of the team as part of its Sox Serve Week.

Charles Griffea has lived in his home on the 6700 block of South Carpenter in the Englewood neighborhood since 1959.

“This area was just beautiful then, 1959, you know, like, 63rd and Halsted was like downtown. Night and day what it used to be," Griffea said.

Dozens of White Sox Volunteer Corps members, along with members of the White Sox coaching staff, in partnership with Rebuilding Together Chicago, were painting, installing carpeting and appliances, and repairing damage on Wednesday.

White Sox manager Rick Renteria was among them.

“All of us are responsible for each other and coming out and seeing everybody doing all the work that they’re doing, we just had to come by and say hello and give them a thanks, appreciation. When people come together, a community comes together it’s pretty awesome. There’s a lot of love that’s going around," Renteria said.

The volunteers applauded when Sox First Base Coach Daryl Boston gave Mr. Griffea a sign reading, "Home Sweet Sox Home."

Griffea said he couldn’t believe what they were doing for him.

The crowd and the press, he said, reminded him of returning from an Honor Flight back in May.
