CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago area attorney said divorce papers may be the best gift you can give yourself and even your spouse on this Valentine’s Day.

Attorney David Schaffer said some marriages are not meant to last a lifetime.

"Valentine’s Day should be a happy day and, if you’re not happy in your marriage, the best present you can give yourself is a divorce," he said.

Attorney David Shaffer recently took out an ad in a west suburban magazine. It depicted a split heart and said, "This Valentine’s Day, get yourself what you really want."

Schaffer said he’s seeing a slight pick-up in so-called “grey” divorces, divorces by people who are older.

"People are living longer and they understand they have better control over how they’re going to spend the rest of their lives," he said.

The lawyer said there tends to be a pick-up in divorce filings around Valentine’s Day. Sometimes, he said, the last straw is the finding of evidence a spouse has been with another Valentine.

"You can never hide an affair. This is the time charges for flowers on the credit card come out, dinners, things like that. This is when everything comes to a peak," Shaffer said.

Shaffer said that, in the end, those who go through the divorce process find themselves happy they went through it.
