CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Customers are flocking to Treasure Island Foods stores; some are taking advantage of the going out of business sales, while others are stopping by to stay goodbye.

The local grocery store chain will shut down on Oct. 12 after 55 years in business.

"They were the ones who provided the specialty items that you could never get at a Jewel or a Dominick's back then.  They were kind of the forefathers of these specialty markets," said Phu Lu, a Treasure Island regular who lives nearby.

His heart goes out to the employees.

"They were notified on a very short basis and now they have to uproot whatever daily committment they had to go for another job."

Treasure Island is offering steep discounts in order to clear out the remaining inventory.

Lu sids he will take advantage of the going out of business sale.

"Olive oils that are there, that they serve in bulk.  That's always a nice touch to fill your own bottle.  They have homemade nut butters.  Those are things you want to take advantage of."
