CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago police said a suspect escaped early Monday morning on the Southeast Side, but was not free for very long.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said 22-year-old Darrell Brewer jumped out of the back of a prisoner transport van around 5:50 a.m. and was hit by a vehicle on 103rd Street near Yates Avenue in the South Deering neighborhood.

Guglielmi said Brewer had been scheduled for a court appearance on Monday after being arrested over the weekend on aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and drug charges in the 6th District.

The escape happened as the prisoner transport van was on its way to the 4th District to pick up additional suspects who had scheduled court appearances Monday.

"We’ll add escape charges once he’s cleared from the hospital, he will go see the judge. But, the charges will be added today," Guglielmi said.

Chicago Fire Department Chief Walter Schroeder said the suspect was taken to Christ Hospital in serious condition. Guglielmi said Brewer's condition was still serious, at last report.

He said it's unclear yet how Brewer escaped. The Police Internal Affairs will investigate the circumstances of the escape.

"We’ll look at how he was restrained and insure that no policies or procedures were violated," Guglielmi said.

Guglielmi said the motorist who hit Brewer has not been charged.
