CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRDIO) -- A small plane crash landed Wednesday on Interstate 55 about 30 miles northeast of Springfield.

The pilot, from Indiana, was alone and told police he had been taking aerial photographs about five miles from the Logan County Airport when the engine aboard the Cessna sputtered to a stop.

Illinois State Police Trooper Sean Ramsey said the pilot indicated he made several attempts to restart the engine before setting the plane down on I-55's median strip.  The plane's wings clipped two cars, but damage to the vehicles and plane was minor and Ramsey said no one was hurt.

Ramsey said the pilot did the best he could, given the circumstances, and will not be ticketed.  The Cessna and its 75-foot wingspan created quite a traffic tie-up until moved off of I-55 on a slow-moving flatbed trailer about four hours after it crash-landed and was returned to the Logan County Airport.
