CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A small plane crashed Thursday morning near Aurora Municipal Airport, police said.

A small plane declared an emergency around 7:10 a.m. Thursday morning while at approximately 5,000 feet into its takeoff roll on the east-west runway at the Aurora Municipal Airport, Aurora spokesman Clayton Muhammad said in a statement.

The plane made a short climb up from the runway and immediately landed in the adjacent field, police said. Emergency responders were dispatched.

Both the pilot and another passenger were not injured and did not seek medical attention.

The plane has minimal damage and was taxied back to the hangar, police said.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said the agency is investigating the crash.
