According to the Shedd, the animal care team confirmed the gender of the calf when it received its first health exam last week. The team said the calf is growing as expected.

"The aquarium is still monitoring mom and calf 24 hours, observing the pair as the calf continues to develop and nurse. The valuable data collected from these observations – especially nursing rates – are shared with partners that are studying wild beluga whales like the population in Canada’s St. Lawrence Seaway, to help better understand how to safeguard the species and monitor population changes," the Shedd said in a statement.

Guests can now view mom, Mauyak, and the male calf in the aquarium’s Secluded Bay habitat.
