CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Powered scooter rentals began in Chicago last weekend and orthopedic surgeons are already seeing casualties.

Dr. John Fernandez said Midwest Orthopedics at Rush has already seen three patients who’ve needed surgery after falls from rental scooters, relatively young adults--two from Chicago and a third from Austin, Texas.

The doctor said that after doing surgery on one of those patient’s wrists Monday, he started noticing scooters everywhere.

"I’m like, ‘Oh, my goodness. We’re going to be in for a tsunami of wrist fractures,’" Dr. Fernandez said.

Dr. Fernandez believes falls are the result of lack of experience of the rider, poor Chicago street conditions and the fact that scooters are electrically powered.

"People are getting on these because they’re very accessible. You just turn your app on, get your credit card and boom, you’re on a scooter and maybe you haven’t been on a scooter for a couple of years," he said.

Dr. Fernandez said one of his patients admits to having a margarita before the scooter accident. The orthopedic surgeon said scooter rentals are a great idea, but that if you don’t want to wind up on his operating table, be extra cautious.
