CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An off-duty U.S. postal worker was killed Sunday in a shooting in Chicago's Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

The woman, identified as Shaunte Stewart, 46, was driving an Infinity SUV about 4:20 a.m. south in the 5100 block of South Prairie Avenue with a male in the passenger seat when someone opened fire from the sidewalk, Chicago police said. The woman was struck in the neck and arm.

The woman kept driving and struck a light pole about a block away, police said. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

CBS 2 spoke with a woman who lives nearby, and who did not want to be named.

“To have the kids out here and have this type of stuff going – that’s why we go in the house early. We don’t even come out here – when it gets dark, we’re in the house,” she said. “We go in the house.”

Members of her postal union said she is the third postal worker to be killed in Chicago this year.

Police believe Stewart was not the intended target.

No arrests have been reported. Area Central detectives are investigating.
