RACINE, Wis. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Authorities reported Thursday that the suspect in the killing of a Racine police officer has been arrested and is currently in the custody of the Kenosha County Jail.

The suspect was identified Friday as Dalquavis T. Ward, 26, of Milwaukee.

According to authorities, Ward's arrest was made Thursday with the "cooperation of over 17 law enforcement agencies and thousands of hours of work by investigators." He was arrested in Milwaukee one day after the funeral for Racine Police Officer John Hetland.

Officer Hetland had been off-duty when he was fatally shot on June 17 at a restaurant. He tried to intervene in an armed robbery at Teezers Bar and Grill. Authorities said Hetland jumped over the bar and confronted a masked, armed man when he was shot.

Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said "this is not done. The investigation intensified right now. We have a person in custody with the evidence we need to put the finishing nails in his coffin - that's what we still have to do.

The Mayor of Racine said his community is still grieving the death of Officer Hetland.

"On the 17th of this month the city experienced a loss that we have not experienced in years. We lost Officer Hetland in the line of duty, defending our city in the midst of a robbery and our city has been grieving since that day," Mayor Cory Mason said.

Hundreds of mourners turned out Wednesday to honor Hetland.
