CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Merciful Minis Therapy Horses brings a smile to those who could use a pick-me-up.

“I’m a retired principal and I’ve always loved horses, so in my retirement I wanted to do something to help others,” said Patty Ulbricht, Founder of Merciful Minis Therapy Horses. She runs the non-profit with her partner, Laura Berry.

The organization offers pet therapy using three Falabella miniature horses.

“We chose Falabellas because they’re known to be particularly kind and willing and, that’s what we want. We want an animal that will walk up to somebody, put their nose on somebody’s shoulder and say, ‘I’m here to help you’ or, ‘I’m here to be your friend.’ The connection they make with people is unbelievable," Ulbricht said.

On the day WBBM Newsradio caught up with Merciful Minis, a Falabella named Mercy was visiting senior citizens at Harvester Place, a memory care facility in Burr Ridge. Many of the seniors sat in a semi-circle and petted the miniature horse as it walked up to each one of them, drawing smiles, laughs and delighted exclamations.

“We just want to make people smile and we’ve done that," she said.

As WBBM celebrates its 50th anniversary as Newsradio, this year we’ll be honoring 50 Newsmakers making a difference in the community.  Listen for reports each Tuesday.
