CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Park Forest police are praising a mom for calling them when she found a BB gun in her son’s bedroom on Monday.

Park Forest Officer Meghan Vold said the mom found the BB gun in her 9-year old son’s book bag.  She said it was an all-black BB gun pistol and looked like a real gun.

"He said that he found it nearby at a park in some bushes. He said he brought it home because he thought it was cool looking," Vold said.

Officer Vold said the boy told her he had not planned to take it to school and that he now understands how important it is to tell his mom when he finds something out-of-the-ordinary.

"This was really a positive, great outcome that we were happy to be a part of," Vold said.

She said the BB gun has been disposed of.

Park Forest Police Chief Christopher Mannino said the mother absolutely did the right thing in going into her son's bedroom and checking out things.

"Over the weekend, we had a string of several vehicles with their windows broken out by BB guns. I don’t think this juvenile or this BB gun was involved, if the parents in that instance were as vigilant, we wouldn’t have these incidents," Mannino said.
