CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago-based food delivery service said vegan and vegetarian options are quickly rising in popularity in the Midwest.

Natalie Gerke, a food trends expert with Grubhub, said for the first five months of this year the company saw a big jump in orders for vegan, vegetarian and meatless dishes led by a plant-based burger.

Gerke said the plant-based "Impossible Burger" saw orders rise 326 percent in the Midwest between January and May of this year.

She also said orders for cheese quesadillas rose 144 percent while orders for waffle fries rose by 135 percent in the Midwest.

Gerke said other parts of the country didn’t see as much of a rise in orders for vegan, vegetarian and meatless dishes, suggesting the Midwest is starting to shift from its reputation as a meat-loving region, though she said many meat dishes remain popular.

She said it's too soon to determine if the Midwest is setting a trend or simply catching up with the rest of the country.
