CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayoral candidate, and former top cop, Garry McCarthy said it's a good thing Mayor Emanuel has decided not to run for re-election, but he's leaving many problems in his wake.

It seems to be a good news-bad news issue for mayoral candidate Garry McCarthy. He said he is pleased to know that Chicago will finally get the new leadership it deserves, but all the challenges the city has faced under Rahm Emanuel still must be solved. The former police superintendent said the Mayor's decision does make the campaign easier for him.

"It changes the campaign because it makes it easier for people who were afraid of the bullying politics of City Hall to come forward and say we are supporting you. People have been doing it behind the scenes and now it's going to be a freeing up," he said.

McCarthy insists he would be ready to take the reigns of the city on day one.
