CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It's back to school for kids all over the Chicago area, including students moving into the dorms at UIC.

The university rolled out the welcome mat for about 700 freshman expected to arrive Wednesday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Housing director Susan Teggatz said 350 freshman moved in before Wednesday and most have already met their roommates, thanks to social media.

"With social media, they get connected a lot quicker than kind of the old days," she said.

Upperclassmen in bright yellow shirts pushed large cardboard or plastic bins on wheels to deliver the newcomer's belongings to their dorm rooms.

Teggatz said staffers are there to give hugs and comfort family members who might be having a hard time with the separation.

Pam and Daniel Purvis came from Alaska to drop off their daughter.

McKenna Purvis said she expects some culture shock moving from Anchorage, but the family has visited Chicago three times in advance of Wednesday's move and Pam said they've met some really nice people.

"Midwest hospitality is true. We thought Alaskans were nice, but we have felt very welcomed and safe and comfortable every time we've been here," Purvis said.
