CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Charges are pending against two people who ran from a crash that left three others dead Sunday in the Tri-Taylor neighborhood on the Near West Side.

About 6 p.m., a Chevrolet Malibu was eastbound near Harrison Street and Oakley Avenue when it collided with a Mitsubishi Outlander southbound on Oakley, Chicago police said. The Malibu then crashed into a light pole and caught fire.

Two people who had been in the Malibu fled; three other occupants suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Their ages and genders were not immediately known.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatalities but hasn’t released details.

The driver of the Outlander suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment, police said.

The two people who ran from the crash were taken into custody and are being questioned by detectives, police said. Charges are pending.

The Chicago police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating.
