CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some people who need root canals could soon find a much easier treatment option, thanks to a professor at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry.

Dr. James Bahcall explains how Vital Pulp Cryotherapy treats decay, which normally needs a much more elaborate and time consuming root canal.

"We place sterile ice, and that's the cyrotherapy portion of the treatment, on this exposed pulp tissue. By placing the ice we lower the temperature of the blood nerve supply and this has clinically shown to reduce inflamation and post-treatment pain for the patient," he said.

Bahcall said the procedure takes as little as 10 minutes to complete, while traditional root canals can take up to two hours.

He said about 5 to 10 percent of patients who would traditionally get root canals could undergo this procedure instead.

Bahcall said the procedure should become more mainstream among dentists in the next year or so.
