CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw played the role of Chicago's Christmas tree ship again Dec. 1 as it delivered 1,200 trees from Michigan to needy Chicago families.

Volunteers helped unload trees from the ship and deliver them to families who eagerly came to pick up their trees, despite the rainy weather. This tradition is more than a century old and the Mackinaw has been delivering trees to Chicago for 19 years.

The ship left Michigan Nov. 26 and arrived here Nov. 30.

Hacton Dave Truitt coordinated the Chicago delivery and said the season would be barren without these trees for some families.

"We are Chicagoans and we take care of our own," Truitt said. "A lot of people cannot afford a Christmas tree."

He said they can cost up to $80 and many do not have the budget for that, so bringing trees in and giving them to families is a way to support the community, extend a giving hand during the holidays and keep an important tradition going strong.
