CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRAIDO) -- Chicago just can't seem to catch a break this year when it comes to rainfall, and the numbers prove it.

The National Weather Service of Chicago said since Jan. 1, the area has received close to 18 inches of water.

"Chicago is in the top five for rainfall from year-to-date," said Meterologist Amy Seeley. "We've just been unlucky to be getting this much rain so early in the year."

Seeley said the numbers are nearly six inches above normal, and part of an ugly trend.

"2017, 2018 and 2019 are all in that top ten of rainfall for this date," she said. "It's been a wet period."

The numbers date back to 1871, but Seeley said they don't necessarily mean a soggy summer ahead.

"We could certainly end up with a stretch of dry weather. You just can't project what we're having now too far into the future."

Seeley said the Rockford area has also received close to 6 inches more rain this year than usual.
