CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A consumer credit website has ranked Chicago eighth on its list of the best U.S. cities to celebrate the Fourth of July this year.

Jill Gonzalez, an analyst for, said Chicago ranks at or near the top of the list when it comes to the number and variety of Independence Day celebrations; and scored very well when it came to the rate of drunk driving arrests and accidents on the Fourth compared to other cities.

"For the most part, a really great spot to be, especially when it comes to attractions and activities and safety and accessibility, specifically on the Fourth of July; but this year could be better when it comes to affordability," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said the relatively high cost of beer and wine, Fourth of July parties that you have to pay to attend, and the average cost of hotel rooms in the Chicago-area lowered the city's overall ranking.

The seven cities that ranked ahead of Chicago on WalletHub’s list are New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Washington, Las Vegas, Dallas and Atlanta.
