CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Police Organized Crime Unit just wrapped up a month-long effort to get criminals off the streets and said officers arrested nearly 200 people now charged with various crimes.

Those targeted include some high-level gang leaders, according First Deputy Police Superintendent Anthony Riccio, who, he said, aren’t just calling the shots regarding narcotics, but also ordering shootings.

"We don't want the low-level guys that are selling drugs on the street corner, we want the guys that are calling the shots. A lot of times the guys calling the shots for the narcotics are the same guys calling the shots for the shootings and for the violence, so those are the people that we want to target. One of the guys arrested in this is a six-time convicted felon. Those are the people we targeted in this investigation. Those are the people we want to get out of the community," Riccio said.

One seized gun, he said, is an assault rifle with a drum that holds 100 rounds.  Imagine that, he said, at a Fourth of July party.

Police said they seized 40 guns, along with drugs and cash.

Part of the intent of the operation was to get people more likely to be involved in violent crime locked up ahead of the holiday weekend. Although some have since been released, which is a source of frustration for the police.

Charges against those arrested include drug dealing and possession, unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a felon.
