(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Even though it's almost four months away, organizers of a popular festival dedicated to bratwursts and German heritage have cancelled this year's event because of COVID-19.

Andy Schmitz is with the Frankfort Lions Club, which hosts the annual Wurst Fest each September in the southwest suburbs.

He says the club has decided to cancel this year's 40th annual event out of safety concerns.

Schmitz says organizers could still hold a modified event if conditions change. For now, he said, the decision to cancel is the right one.

Wurst Fest raises money for various charitable activities of the Lions Club, including charitable food deliveries and free vision screenings.

Schmitz says the club will still holding the raffle associated with Wurst Fest. It also plans a sweepstakes fundraiser in October, as long as it complies with whatever COVID-19 restrictions are still in place then.
