CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An employee at a Park Ridge-based financial planners association turned a generous gesture by her boss into a big donation to a domestic violence shelter in DuPage County.

The CEO at Million Dollar Round Table gave each employee a $100 gift card to pass along to people whose lives have been disrupted by COVID-19.

Heather Booton decided she would help Family Shelter Service in Wheaton, but she said she realized the shelter needed much more help than her gift card could provide.

"So I reached out to some friends on Facebook for help," she said, as well as Facebook groups she belongs to and asked for donations. She raised more than $2,000 for the shelter.

She said she was able to use that money to buy meals, cookies, masks, and books for clients at Family Shelter Service.

Booton said she was also able to help local businesses she shopped at, which have been struggling because of COVID-19 restrictions.
