GARY, INDIANA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 22-year-old Gary, Indiana woman has been charged with parental neglect following the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old girl.

Dashana Mattica Fowler faces one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Tuesday night, officers responded to a home in the 1700 block of Polk Street and found Jayla Miller, 2, with a gunshot wound to her head, Gary police said. She was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where she died.

“This unfortunate incident involved an innocent young child and could have been easily avoided by keeping firearms away from children,” the Gary Police Department said in a news release Thursday. “Firearms are not toys and should always be considered loaded and secured away from children. Firearm safety and education is paramount.”

Fowler was at the Lake County Jail. She also faces three counts of neglect of a dependent, because three other children were present during the fatal injury, police said.
