(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The South may be used to dealing with brown recluse spiders. Here in northern Illinois, not so much.

But a 72-year-old Kendall County woman says she was bitten by a brown recluse more than three months ago, and she's still dealing with it.

It was August 21. Just back at work from knee replacement, Marlene Kee was sitting at her desk at work in Plano.

"All of a sudden I felt something on my pant leg. I was reading something and I just swished at it. And I thought, 'Oh my gosh, I got bit by a mosquito,’” she recalled Monday.

She went home and thought it would get better. For a few days, it got worse. So, she went to a doctor.

"And I showed it to her and she says, 'That's a brown recluse spider bite, and you're in trouble.'  And I thought, oh my God, what are we doing here?"

Kee had to go through a draining procedure.

"I usually can take a lot of pain. That hurt like …terrible."

She says her husband was surprised at how much pain she was in: "He said, 'I never heard you scream like that,' and I said, 'This is worse than having my babies.'"

Kee says she's on the mend, but not back to normal.
