WAUSAU, Wisconsin (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Mayor of a Wisconsin city is looking to set the record straight: He's no Grinch when it comes to snowball fights.

"It's a story about nothing, sort of like a 'Seinfeld' episode," Wausau Mayor Robert B. Mielke said Monday.

The story centers on a 1962 Wausau ordinance that deems snowballs a banned throwing projectile.

"Yes, it's on the books. It's not really enforced," Mielke told WBBM Newsradio's Andy Dahn.

Mielke says unfortunately, some large media outlets have latched onto the story and suggested the snowball ban is a new thing that he masterminded. That, in turn, generated undue criticisms from people thinking the city was acting a bit too strict, the mayor said.

So, earlier this month, the Wausau Police Department participated in a social media video showing them throwing snowballs.

The city council may vote next month on a specific measure to technically erase the snowball prohibition.
