Will Emanuel Campaign Cash Trickle To Other Candidates?

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A campaign finance expert says Mayor Emanuel could help other candidates with the nearly $8 million left in his political fund.

Mary Miro, executive director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, says when a candidate sets up a political campaign fund, he or she can choose what happens to the money left when a campaign is over.

They can return the money to donors, support other political candidates or donate to charity.

Miro says Rahm Emanuel’s fund documents indicate “support for other candidates.”

She notes that there are a number of aldermanic races he might want to weigh in on financially, and the law allows that and for other candidates within the same party.

Miro says there could be some question about how binding checking those boxes might be.

In fact, though, the mayor has used campaign money to help aldermanic candidates before.
