CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The West Side's Whitney Young High School has cut the ribbon on a new athletic field named for former First Lady Michelle Obama, a champion of physical fitness.

Whitney Young Development Director Deb Keegan said Monday the school’s old field accommodated only baseball and looked its more than 40 years.

The track teams have had to run along neighborhood streets, until now.

The Michelle Obama Athletic Complex will accommodate football practice, girl’s softball, Lacrosse, track and soccer.

Seniors Esme McCarthy and Rodney Bejabeng will be able to use the new complex to train for their goal of winning a soccer championship.

Both said they’ll be honored to practice and play on a field named for the former first lady, who went to their school.

Michelle Obama sent a video to the school, thanking everyone for the honor.
