CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Workers who make the minimum wage in Chicago got a raise Sunday.

Chicago's minimum wage rose a dollar an hour to $12, and next July it will increase to $13.

At an unrelated event, Mayor Rahm Emanuel took aim at critics, who predicted raising the minimum wage would hurt the city's economy.

"Poverty is down in Chicago, and 36,000 fewer kids are in poverty today,” he said.

A study by the Illinois Economic Policy Institute and the University of Illinois claims Chicago's minimum wage hikes have already helped at least 330-thousand workers.
