CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Wedding season is kicking into high gear. Although it can be a very joyful time, it can also be very expensive for all parties involved, including guests.

According to Bankrate.com, the average wedding guest spends a total of $628 on the big day and related activities. The cost increases even more if they're part of the wedding party.

"I just went to an east coast wedding this weekend, came back and I said, ‘This really is expensive!’” Craig Bolanos, CEO of Wealth Management Group, told the Noon Business Hour.

“It wasn't the wedding gift, it was the clothes, it was the travel, it was the pre-party, it was the bachelor party. You wrap all that up, you do it once or twice in a year, it can really set you back financially.”

He adds the trend of valuing experiences over material goods is also playing into the rising cost of attending a wedding.
