CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Volunteers collected personal protective equipment for those on the frontlines of the coronavirus epidemic during a drive outside the United Center this afternoon.

They accepted latex gloves, face masks, antibacterial wipes and other supplies from noon until 4 p.m. during a drive held by the organization Project Cure.

Project Cure Executive Director Beth Rottman said since the virus started spreading in the U.S., the group switched its focus from sending medical supplies to other countries and redirected its efforts here.

A woman from Chicago wearing a mask herself said she dropped off supplies because she wanted to help in the fight against the disease.

Boxes of donations were loaded up on trucks to go to the group's warehouse in Woodridge.

Rottman said they'll collaborate with public officials to distribute the personal protective equipment to nursing homes, medical facilities, police and fire departments.
