CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While hundreds of police officers and Supt. Eddie Johnson participated in the department's annual award ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Chicago hotel Friday, someone was vandalizing police vehicles parked nearby.

The vandal bashed the windshields of six unmarked police vehicles and the rear window of a marked unit, using concrete chunks as many as four times on a single windshield.

An angry exchange of words preceded the arrest on Lower Wacker Drive, outside of the hotel.

Before long, curious officers emerging from the recognition ceremony appraised the scene, giving it the look of a major crime investigation.

"It's ridiculous that someone would take a day like this (ceremony) and do something like that, but that just goes to show you we've got some mean and evil people in this world," Johnson said..  "But the good news is that we did place the offender in custody, and he'll get his day in court."

Johnson's own police vehicle was part of the 14-car lineup that was hit, but his car escaped undamaged.
