Urban Village Church Offering Ash Wednesday Ashes To Go

Urban Village Church is offering 'blessings on the go'.

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, a significant day for Christians, marking the start of Lent.

Rather than stepping inside a church or attending a traditional service, Urban Village Church is offering 'blessings on the go'. 

"Regardless of the weather, we're out here!"

Pastor Christian Coon and members of the church braved the cold temperatures at Daley Plaza to place ashes on foreheads and bless those who passed by.

"They're glad we're out here because they can't always get to their own service," Coon said, "they find it helpful that there's good in their daily life." 

Coon said it's a good way to reach more people.

"It gives us a good opportunity to be there for Christians, but for others who are curious and want to know more," the pastor said.

Urban Village Church will also be outside several CTA stops throughout the day, including:

UVC’S South Loop/Downtown congregation will offer ashes at: 

  • Chick-Fil-A Restaurant (177 N. State Street): Noon – 1 p.m.
  • CTA Roosevelt Station: 5 – 6 p.m.

UVC’s Wicker Park congregation will offer ashes at:

  • CTA Division Blue Line Station: 5 – 6 p.m.

UVC’s Edgewater congregation will offer ashes at:

  • Clark & Berwyn Intersection: Noon – 1 p.m.;
  • Evanston, near Northwestern University (Sheridan & Chicago): Noon – 1 p.m.
  • CTA Bryn Mawr Red Line Station: 5 – 6 p.m.

UVC’s Hyde Park / Woodlawn congregation will offer ashes at: 

  • Target, 1346 East 53rd St.: Noon – 1 p.m.
  • Metra Station at 55th-57th: 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

*For the first time* UVC’s River Forest/Oak Park west suburban congregation will offer ashes at:

  • Metra River Forest Station: 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
  • CTA Oak Park Green Line Station: 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
