CHICAGO – The 15-year-old girl seen in a viral video being beaten by a group of peers has been located and is safe, authorities say.

Questions lingered Wednesday about why other young people attacked the girl, whom police say may have a mental illness, and whether she was otherwise abused.

Community Activist Stringer Harris said the unnamed girl was attacked because she wouldn't go along with an illicit act among the five other girls and an 18-year-old male.

The video shows the victim walking with the group down an alley when one of the other girls begins hitting her. The victim ends up on the ground, wailing.

The victim apparently was missing, before images of the attack went viral.

The girl was found by a friend on a Blue Line train, according to Harris. She was taken to the hospital.

He said two girls turned themselves into police and were released.

Chicago police ask anyone with information to reach out to Area Central Detectives.

The victim's family is seeking justice, Harris told reporters, but not reprisals against the other girls in the attack.

News about the disturbing video surfaced Tuesday, but it wasn't clear when the event itself happened.
