CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There's a happy ending to the story about an incident in which a North Side couple’s dog was stolen in an apartment burglary.

A very relieved Danny Castaneda told us his little dog named Frida is back home.

“We’re very happy, very grateful.  We definitely feel like it would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the people around us sharing Frida’s story.”

He said he got a message from what appeared to him to be a fake Facebook page.  It included a phone number for someone who was selling the 4-and-a-half-pound Shih Tzu–Yorkie mix.

“I just reached out and essentially played along and said, ‘hey I hear you’re selling a Shih Tzu for $300. I’m interested. Do you have any pictures?  And he responded within a few minutes and, again, I just played along and said, 'oh, she’s adorable.’”

A few texts later, he said, they set up a meeting in a store parking lot. He said he had a friend make the deal because he was concerned that the man might be frightened off if the dog were to react to seeing him.

Castaneda said he watched from a car on the other side of the parking lot as the friend made the deal with a man wearing a hat, a hoodie and sun glasses.

He said it was an emotional reunion.

“We’re definitely just really, really happy to have her home and have her safe," he said.

Castaneda said the dog seemed “a little shaken up.”

He said they took her home, gave her a food, water and a bath and “she went right to sleep.”

He said he has no interest in pursuing charges against the man.

The dog was taken from Castaneda's friend's apartment in the Logan Square neighborhood last Friday morning while he and his partner were out of town.
