(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A graduate of the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana wants her alma mater to revive the old mascot Chief Illiniwek.

The U of I bade farewell to the symbol, under pressure from the NCAA. A push to reinvent the chief in 2013 didn't get much support.

Colleen McCoy, class of 1988, suggests the university should form closer ties with the Peoria Tribe of Oklahoma in an attempt to create a new version of Chief Illiniwek.

McCoy also suggested the school create a scholarship for a tribe member who could serve as a campus ambassador.

The Peoria tribe recently issued a statement calling the mascot a degrading racial stereotype.

The university said the chief is not coming back.
