(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The driver of a pickup truck is in custody and facing charges after he allegedly collided overnight with another vehicle and then crashed into a home, pinning the sleeping occupant, the Lake County Illinois Sheriff’s Department said.

Authorities say driver Talon C. Franz, 28, of Fox Lake was operating a 2009 GMC pickup truck and traveling at a high rate of speed, northbound on Route 12 near North Lake Terrace, around 1:45 a.m. The truck struck a northbound Volkswagon SUV, then hit a utility pole before driving through a fence and hitting a home in the 28900 block of South Avenue in unincorporated Spring Grove.

Franz allegedly fled. Fox Lake Fire Department officials who responded to the scene extricated the 71-year-old home owner, who had been sleeping and was pinned under the vehicle. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department said.

A dog and two cats from the home unaccounted for, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies later located Franz at his residence. He faces several charges, including leaving the scene of a personal injury traffic crash, reckless driving and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

He remains held in the Lake County Jail on $75,000.00 bail.  He is next due in court on May 22.

Two people in the Volkswagon were not seriously injured, officials said.
