CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Stroger Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center, was participating in Wear Orange weekend, which is meant to highlight the toll of gun violence.

Stroger expects to see a 30 percent to 40 percent increase in the number of trauma patients over the summer months. So, trauma nurses will add three staffing members per shift during the busiest days of the week -- Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Dr. Faran Bokhari, chairman of the trauma and burn unit at Stroger, is advocating for stronger federal gun legislation.

He said at a news conference Friday that Chicago has among the toughest gun laws in the country, but that's not enough to keep the guns out when nearby states don't have such restrictions

He said it will take federal laws to make a difference.
