(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As work on the 2019 Tri-State Tollway construction project intensifies, officials were on hand to answer commuter's concerns at the first of three open houses Monday night.

The big turnout inside the Burr Ridge Police Department came as no surprise to Gene Beube.

"This is an extremely important road for everybody who lives around here, anywhere in Chicago," he said. "It's costing us all money through our tax base and we'd like to have that meet the best use."

As part of the $4 billion project, I-294 is being reconstructed from Balmoral to 95th, both the Mile Long and BNSF Railway bridges are being repaired and sections of the tollway are being widened.

"This is a big project for us, but it's also a big project for the region," said Rocco Zucchero, Chief Planning Officer for the Illinois Tollway. "We're addressing a lot of longstanding problems with congestion, providing some new access and improving some existing access and interchanges along the corridor."

Zucchero said the tollway plans to maintain four lanes of traffic throughout the duration of the project.
