CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Authorities are trying to find the family of a near-naked 3- or 4-year-old boy found wandering on a South Shore street Monday afternoon.

It was a few minutes past 2 p.m. when the boy was found.

Postal Service Spokesman Tim Norman says a 31-year-old postal carrier -- on her route in the 74-hundred block of South Clyde -- found the boy.

"Fortunately, the letter carrier called 911."

Police responded. Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford says the boy was sitting in the back of a police squad car when the fire department arrived.

"They looked the child over, talked to him. He would give them his first name but that's about it,” Langford said.

He said the child appeared in good health.

Police say the boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital.

The state’s child-welfare agency was looking into the case, according to police.
