CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you're traveling this holiday season, an airline industry group says technology could be your best friend.

John Heimlich of Airlines for America said many carriers have beefed up their apps, web sites and social media in recent years to help both experienced passengers and infrequent fliers navigate obstacles such as bad weather, lost luggage and rescheduling flights.

"The airlines keep investing in more functionality," Heimlich said about airline smartphone apps. "I recently used them to purchase tickets, to check in for my flight in advance.”

With airline apps, web sites and social media, it's easier than ever to get real-time updates on the status of your flight, he said.

"Receive real-time flight notifications, change of gate, change of airplane type, slight change in time of departure -- those sorts of things. You can send the itinerary to your family, who might be picking you up at the airport," Heimlich said.

Heimlich said many airlines and the TSA have also posted helpful information on their web sites.
