(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Indiana State Police say three suspects are in custody and one is hurt, after a chase in Northwest Indiana Wednesday afternoon that led police to open fire.

WBBM’s Jim Gudas reports.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Ted Bohner said the chase began when Valparaiso police tried to stop a car on Calumet Avenue but the car took off.

Bohner says the car later crashed on the Indiana Toll Road and two of the males were later arrested without incident in a wooded area near Chesterton.

The third male tried and failed to steal one vehicle stuck in traffic on the Toll Road, then stole a maintenance truck along the Toll Road, hit a semi, then drove it toward officers, Bohner said.

The male then drove off, hit another semi, tried to run away but was arrested.

Bohner says this male was injured as a result of the gunfire, but he says it’s not clear if a bullet hit the male or if he was hit by debris caused by a bullet.
