CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An off-duty Chicago police officer opened fire on a possible burglary suspect in Hyde Park Wednesday afternoon, though it was not immediately clear if the person was struck by gunfire.

Around 12:30 p.m., the 46-year-old officer was in the 5100 block of South Ingleside Ave. when he “interrupted what we believe to be a burglary in progress” in a home on the block, Sgt. Rocco Alioto told reporters.

During an “encounter” in the home, the officer fired at the man, who then ran off, Alioto said.

“At this time, we’re unsure whether the suspect was injured in the encounter,” Alioto said.

Chief CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi initially said the officer was intervening in the burglary of a neighbor’s home and that the suspect was indeed shot.

It was also unclear if the suspect was armed or not and no gun had been found at the scene as of late Wednesday afternoon. It was also not known how many shots were fired by the officer.

Anyone with information is asked to call Area Central detectives at (312) 747-8380.

The suspected burglar left the area but has not showed up at any hospitals, Guglielmi said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability responded to the scene to investigate the shooting.
