CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Six people were shot, two of them fatally, across Chicago on Thursday.

A man was killed while trying to intervene as his niece was sexually assaulted in Burnside on the South Side.

At about 9 p.m., a 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in a bedroom after a male got inside through a window in the 500 block of East 89th Place, Chicago police said. The girl’s 66-year-old uncle rushed to help after he heard her screaming, and the attacker opened fire, striking him in the head and back.

He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The girl was taken to Trinity Hospital, where her condition was stabilized. Police said they have a possible suspect in custody.

Another man was killed less than an hour later while driving in Ashburn on the South Side.

The 21-year-old was driving at about 9:50 p.m. in the 8100 block of South Spaulding Avenue when shots rang out from an unknown direction, police said. He was struck in the chest and crashed the vehicle into an electrical pole in the 7900 block of South Sawyer Avenue. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office hasn’t released details on either death.

In non-fatal shootings, a 14-year-old boy was critically wounded in Albany Park on the Northwest Side.

A witness told police they saw a dark-colored vehicle follow the one the teen was in at about 10:33 p.m. in the 4800 block of North Central Park Avenue, police said. Someone fired shots into the rear window, striking the boy in the head. He was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

Hours earlier, a man was shot in Logan Square on the Northwest Side.

The 18-year-old was on the sidewalk at about 6:49 p.m. in the 2800 block of North Hamlin Avenue when a black SUV approached and someone inside started shooting, police said. He was hit in the lower back and taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

Two men were wounded in Thursday’s earliest reported shooting outside a bar in Gresham on the South Side.

At about 12:20 a.m., a male outside Mini Club, 8338 S. Halsted St., fired shots into the bar after being denied entry, a police source said.

One man, 21, was shot in the leg and another man, 46, was struck in the back, police said. The 21-year-old was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center while the 46-year-old was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Both were stabilized.

Wednesday’s gun violence left one person dead and injured two others.
