CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A home owner in the Gresham neighborhood wants Cook County to take another look at his property tax assessment and make some changes.

WBBM's Michele Fiore reports.

Abdul Hakim-Shabazz represents the owner, in the 7900 block of South Laflin. The owner is suing the county assessor and Cook County.

The lawsuit filed this week says for the last five years, the defendants have "improperly assessed property in Cook County resulting in the underassessment of commercial property and over-assessment of residential property."

The assessed value on Cook County homes is up as much as 60 percent this year. A recent statement from the assessor's office defended the increase, saying previous values were too low because of the housing crash.
