Suburbs Not Interested In Being Annexed By Chicago
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Suburban leaders are reacting to a Chicago mayoral candidate's proposal for the city to annex several suburbs. WBBM's jim Gudas reports.
Former-Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says the annexation of Norridge, Oak Lawn, Oak Park and Evergreen Park would boost the city's declining population and help pay for about $1 billion in future pension costs.
Norridge Village President James Chmura calls the proposal a "joke."
"Because Chicago couldn't keep their house in order, their finances in order, now they want everybody else to bail them out," he said.
Chmura, Oak Lawn Village Manager Larry Deetjen and Evergreen Park Mayor James Sexton all say their communities are fiscally responsible, they shouldn't have to help bail out Chicago, and that their residents overwhelmingly oppose becoming part of Chicago.
