CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A recent study by the American Journal of Emergency Medicine found that as avocados increased in popularity over the last 20 years, so do the number of knife injuries from avocado preparation.

People give them a deep cut while trying to remove the pit from an avocado.

But that's not all.

"You know if you break a glass, you're going to cut your hand. So we do see a lot of these types of injuries in the emergency department especially on days like this," said Dr. Ernest Wang, an emergency medicine physician at Northshore University Healthsystem.

He said a cut to hand can be more than a couple of stitches.

"Poke yourself in the palm, you risk damage to the nerves, the tendons," he continued.

Wang said another source of ER visits on Super Bowl Sunday comes from people who eat or drink too much during the game.
