Striking Hotel Workers March Through Downtown

September 13, 2018 - 6:43 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Several hundred striking hotel workers - from 26 hotels - marched downtown this afternoon.

First they had a rally outside the Sheraton Grand. Then, they marched up Michigan Avenue toward the Drake.

A main issue: the demand that hotels pay for health insurance for employees year-round.

One 57-year-old man who didn't want to give his name said he's a waiter at one of the downtown hotels and has worked there for 36 years.

For the past few years, he said, he's been laid off during some of the winter months, with no health insurance.

"I'm at a risk for stroke. So, do I take the chance of not having insurance or do I take it out of my pocket?

"I can barely pay my bills with what I get from unemployment. So, I really don't have the money to pay for the medical expenses out of my pocket, so it's a struggle for me."

The hotel strike has been on since last Friday.
