AURORA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The leader of Aurora’s Muslim community has been honored with an honorary street naming, both for his religious leadership and his care as a cardiologist.

Speakers said Friday that Dr. Abbas Khawaja has fostered understanding while providing medical care that has saved countless lives over the decades.

Khawaja’s nephew Manny says that began with Thanksgiving Day visits by his extended family to Aurora’s Catholic, evangelical, Pentecostal, Hindu and Buddhist places of worship. He said the object was to “build solidarity.”

Khawaja said he is humbled by the designation, on Timberlake Lane at Indian Trail, outside of the Fox Valley Muslim Center.

Even the weather cooperated, rain holding off just long enough for the unveiling ceremony and photo-taking.
